Convergence, contestation or different paths? The Right to an Explanation Regarding Automated Decision-Making in Latin America

Join us on June 9 for a talk with Pablo Contreras, organized by the Law, Science, Technology, and Society (LSTS) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB).

As automated decision-making spreads across public and private life, the right to understand how an algorithm reached a decision has moved to the centre of debates on AI governance, data protection, and fundamental rights. This talk turns to Latin America, where Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, and Paraguay are reforming their data protection laws and shaping new AI frameworks at the same time. Their experience offers a revealing test of how the European model travels, where it takes root, and where it departs, which makes it of direct interest to anyone following the global trajectory of AI regulation.
